Bible Commentaries

Bible commentaries are explanations and interpretations of the Bible. Lemieux Library's print collection includes many commentaries, including versions of the Anchor Bible, World Biblical Commentary, and New Jerome series. Online commentaries are also available through the Lemieux Library catalog.

Anchor Bible Commentaries are a widely-used series of commentaries providing background information, major themes and topics, competing scholarly interpretations, maps, illustrations, and more.

Hermeneia Bible Commentaries are a series of commentaries that provide a thorough and critical view of Biblical text.

Tyndale Bible Commentaries are part of a series exploring both the Old Testament and the New Testament, written by Evangelical scholars from various English-speaking countries.

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is a widely-used Catholic commentary published in 1990. A previous edition, the Jerome Biblical Commentary, was published in 1968.

The Oxford Bible Commentary is written by a range of scholars and seeks to provide a 21st century perspective on Biblical studies. It is available entirely online. SU log-in required.

Commentaries and other related resources are shelved in the same order in which they appear in the Bible. Duke University Library provides a useful guide listing the relevant call numbers for materials related to each book of the Old and New Testament.
