Open Access publications are available to read free of charge on the Internet.  Open Access is an alternative publishing model aimed at relieving researchers and libraries of the burden of paying high subscription costs for access to scholarly content, particularly in the sciences and medicine.  OA journals employ the same rigorous peer review as subscription-based journals, and many such as BMJ Open and PLOS One have high impact factors.  Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science
