Writing and presenting in the biological sciences has a few significant differences from other disciplines. Below are some useful resources.
Citation managers
- RefWorks This link opens in a new windowRefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to gather, organize, store information and to generate citations and bibliographies.
PLEASE NOTE:With consideration for rising costs, low usage, and the availability of free and open-source citation management tools, we will be canceling our subscription to RefWorks effective December 31, 2024. The library currently recommends and will continue to support Zotero, a free and open-source citation management tool with the same functions and features as RefWorks.

The library supports RefWorks, but there are a number of other citation manager tools that you can try.
- ZoteroA free, open source tool that you can download from the web and install on your computer. A good choice is you do most of your research on the same computer.
- EndNoteSubscription based tool that allows users to create and formate bibliographies.
- MendeleyOnline based reference manager with social networking. Useful for sharing references with group members.
- ZoterobibFree service that builds one time bibliographies without creating accounts or downloading software.
