Student Scholarship: Kubota Legacy Garden Booklet, "The Life & Legacy of Fujitarō Kubota"

Independent academic research projects provide collaborative opportunities for undergraduate student scholarship and faculty mentorship. Amelia Delgado, Class of 2021, Bachelor of Arts in Design, and Professor Naomi Kasumi, Fine Arts, partnered with Shannon Britton, Seattle University Grounds and Landscaping to design and illustrate a booklet titled, “The Kubota Legacy: The Life of Fujitarō Kubota and the Legacy of his Gardens in Seattle and on the Seattle University Campus.” 

The 24x36 inch booklet shares the development of the Kubota Legacy Garden currently in front of the Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation. Landscape designer, Fujitaro Kubota, is well-known for merging Japanese tradition with Pacific Northwest native plants. His work with Seattle University in the 1950s and 60’s established a series of campus gardens that unified the grounds. Current and historical photographs are also included.  

The digital edition of the Kubota publication can be accessed on Seattle University’s open-access institutional repository, ScholarWorks, and in print in the University’s Special Collections. Lemieux Library & McGoldrick Learning Commons is committed to preserving and sharing its intellectual scholarship with the world, including this recent booklet that supports student academic success and showcases the historical legacy of the Kubota Gardens at Seattle University.
