Interlibrary Loan at SU

Open ILLiad in a new tab.

While logged in to your SU ILLiad account you can make requests, track requests, and download articles you have requested.

First time users will be asked to fill out a brief registration form before making requests.

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service free to the user through which you can request research materials, such as books, journal articles, book chapters, videos, and other materials that are not available in the Seattle University Libraries or in Summit. Course textbooks may not be requested. Please see the Interlibrary Loan Policy/FAQ for additional information.

What happens after I make a request?

After you make a request, Interlibrary Loan (ILL) staff will act on it by searching for other libraries that will loan or copy the desired material. Once the material arrives, you will be notified via email that your request is ready for retrieval. Loans (physical items) will be held at the 3rd floor Circulation Desk for you to check out, and article or chapter scans will be uploaded to your ILLiad account for you to download.

Who may use Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan at Lemieux Library is available to current students, faculty and staff. Patrons from the Law school should use ILL services from the Law Library.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the system that manages your ILL requests. Using ILLiad you can track the status of your requests, check due dates, renew checked out materials, and view your ILL borrowing history.

The first time you use ILLiad you will be prompted to fill out a one-time registration form, and then you can dive right in!

Creating Your ILLiad Account

First Time Users - Register Your ILLiad Account

The first time you log into ILLiad, you will see the New User Registration form.

  • Enter all information requested.
  • Required fields are indicated with an asterisk “*”.
  • The email address you enter must be your Seattle University email address. No outside email addresses will be allowed.
  • You will need your SU ID#.
  • After entering all necessary user information and reading the copyright statement, click the button “Submit Information” at the bottom of the page to complete your registration.

Changing account information

  • If you need to change your account information, login to your ILLiad account and click Change User Information on the ILLiad Main Menu -- Tools.

How to Submit ILL Requests

To place a request:

  • Login to your ILLiad account.
  • The menu on the left lists the different types of requests you can make (shown below). If the material you'd like to request doesn't fit into any of the choices, use "Other Citations" and enter as much information as you can about what you're requesting.

On the request form:

  • Fill in all required fields on the request form (required fields are marked with an asterisk *). Any extra information makes it easier to process your request, so please add any further details in the appropriate fields.
  • If you have a close deadline, please let us know. Either adjust the "Not Wanted After Date" to your deadline, or tell us in the Notes field.
  • Click "Submit Request" to complete your request.

Renewing ILLiad Materials

Some ILL materials can be renewed for a longer checkout period. To request a renewal, login to ILLiad and select Checked Out Items from the left hand column. From there you can select any materials you have currently checked out to you. If a renewal request is allowed, you will have the option to Renew Request. Click on that, and ILL staff will contact the lending library to see if they will grant a renewal. Renewals are not guaranteed and are granted solely at the discretion of the lending library.

Tracking ILLiad Requests

  • You can track all ILL requests you've made in ILLiad using the options from the "View" menu in the main menu.

  • Active Requests - Lists all of the user's currently active requests. You can view their progress from that menu.
  • Article Downloads - Most articles will be delivered to the Web, and can be accessed and downloaded from here.
  • Checked Out Items - Lists all ILL materials currently checked out to you.
  • Cancelled Requests - Lists all ILL requests that have been cancelled. You may edit and resubmit requests from this page.
  • Completed Requests - Lists all successfully completed requests.
  • All Requests - Lists all ILL requests ever submitted by the user, regardless of current status.
  • Notifications - A comprehensive list of every email ILLiad has ever sent you.

Receiving Your ILLiad Materials

Books, Scores, and other physical materials

  • Books and other physical materials will be available to pick up at the Lemieux Library Circulation Desk. You will get an email notifying you that the ILL materials are ready to be picked up.

Articles & Book Chapters

  • Most articles and book chapters will be posted as PDF files to your ILLiad account. To access them, login to your ILLiad account and click View/Download Electronically Received Articles. Please note that the PDF file is only accessible for 30 days; if you want to keep it, you must save it to your hard drive or a USB drive. Some articles cannot be digitized and must be picked up at the Lemieux Library circulation desk.

Resubmitting Cancelled Requests

Not all ILL requests can be processed, and your request may be cancelled if there is a reason it cannot be filled. If this happens, your request does not disappear, but is stored in the Cancelled Requests menu. From there you can review all of your cancelled requests, edit information in those requests, and resubmit them if you want. This is a useful tool if your request was cancelled because of an incomplete citation. You can just plug in the needed information and send it right back to ILL staff!

NOTICE: WARNING OF COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

The Lemieux Library reserves the right to refuse to accept a copy request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that request would involve violation of copyright law.
