This page provides general information on Lemieux Library’s course reserves and answers common instructor questions about utilizing course reserves to make material available to students.

Course Material Access Options

Seattle University instructors rely on a wide variety of teaching and learning materials. This table provides an overview of current instructor options for making both library and non-library materials available to students, as well as links to relevant campus resources.

Material Recommended Options Restrictions & Considerations
Books and Textbooks

Campus Store

Sells and rents books in physical and electronic formats

Canvas- Library eBooks

Linking to library eBooks (rather than uploading copies) avoids copyright concerns

Libraries are often unable to license or purchase textbooks in electronic format

Library ebooks may be subject to use restrictions. These limits may include the number of concurrent users; total number of uses; and limits on printing and downloading

Canvas- Open Educational Resources (OER)

Open Educational Resources are freely available online

Both CDLI (CDLI OER guide) and the library (library OER guide) offer guides to locating quality open resources, including open textbooks

Electronic Journal Article or Book Chapter from Library Collection

Linking to library resources (rather than uploading copies) avoids copyright concerns

Print Journal Article or Book Chapter from Library Collection Library Course Reserves (electronic)

We provide very limited access to physical course reserves. Ebooks and streaming media are the preferred formats. Instructors may submit requests to place print materials on electronic reserve

If purchase or license of electronic materials is not feasible, the Library may create scans for electronic reserve

Per the Course Reserves Policy, scanning is restricted by copyright law to limited portions of print materials

Reprographic Services provides copyright guidance and assistance in securing permissions when necessary

Article or Book Chapter from a Non-Library Source Canvas

Instructors are responsible for complying with copyright when uploading items to Canvas

Video Canvas

Linking to library streaming media resources (rather than uploading copies) avoids copyright concerns

Instructors are responsible for complying with copyright if they upload video files to Canvas

Library Course Reserves (electronic)

We provide very limited access to physical course reserves. Streaming media is the preferred format.

Contact a Liaison Librarian or Jan Hartley if you wish to use video not currently available through the library in streaming format

Depending on title availability, the library may be able to make additional streaming video available via links or through electronic course reserves

Instructor-Generated Material Canvas

Instructors own copyright in course materials they create (syllabi, sample tests, homework solutions, etc.)

Instructional material created by others is protected by copyright and should be shared only in accordance with copyright law

Student-Generated Material Canvas

Student-generated material is protected by copyright and FERPA, and should be shared only with written permission
