"Open access" is a term used to describe information that is freely available to anyone with internet connectivity. This term is used in direct opposition to academic databases and journals that require users (usually academic libraries) to pay subscription fees.

The concept of "predatory publishing" has emerged to describe academic journals (and sometimes conferences) that claim to offer guaranteed publishing, extremely fast peer review, and other opportunities for academics looking to publish. These journals are often seeking to make a profit.
