Join us on April 29th, from 3:00PM – 8:30PM for the Healing Through Arts Showcase. To culminate a month of education and advocacy, the event will honor the stories and experiences of survivors and will feature a gallery of artwork created and submitted by members of the Seattle University community, a Zine workshop hosted by Student Engagement Librarian, Shelley Carr, selected readings by Stephanie Kuehnert from her newly released memoir, “Pieces of a Girl”, open-mic spoken word poetry and a movement for healing class facilitated by University Recreation instructors. The event will center and showcase artwork that expresses strength, resilience, healing for sexual and gender-based violence through creative expressions such as poetry, art, photography, visual media and more!

Students, faculty, or staff who would like to contribute artwork to the event can express their interest here or attend the drop-in art hours hosted Friday April 26th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm in Student Center Room 380 (Wellness and Health Promotion Office) where free art supplies (free t-shirts to contribute to the displayed Clothesline Project, canvases, clay, and other materials provided). Submissions may be anonymous if desired.

In addition to the Lemieux Library, this event and others in the SAAM Series are sponsored by Wellness and Health Promotion, University Recreation, The MOSAIC Center, The Center for Student Involvement, Counseling and Psychological Services, Campus Ministry, Department of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Forensics, and Emerald Plate Catering.  A special thanks goes to Mikaela Wallin, Associate Director for Wellness and Health Promotion, for her lead role in planning and organizing this, and other, events to recognize SAAM.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We also encourage folks to attend the “History of Sexual Violence” panel to learn about the intersectional history of sexual violence that centers and amplifies the ways in sexual violence has been employed as a means of oppression against BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals. This panel is on Tuesday, April 30 2024 at 12:30pm-1:30pm in Chardin 142.
Panelists Featured:

  • Carolyn DeFord, MMIWG advocate, Trafficking Project Coordinator for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, and board member of the Washington State Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People Task Force.
  • Dr. Michael Ng, PhD, History Instructor at Seattle University with a focus on colonialism, imperialism, and antiquity.

We welcome participants to learn more about the impact of sexual violence on communities of color and LGBTQ+ communities, in the past and present. Contact wellness@seattleu.edu for more information or visit: https://seattleu.campuslabs.com/engage/event/10067217
