Displays Policy

Library Displays Goals

Displays are a valuable part of the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons outreach and user education. Displays provide an excellent opportunity for the Library to engage in collaborative projects with students and the broader Seattle University community, to encourage and support intellectual, creative, and cultural pursuits. The Library prioritizes accepting student-led display collaborations and displays from Seattle University affiliates.

The Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons supports the American Library Association’s recommendation for Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries, which states that “Freedom of information and of creative expression should be reflected in the library exhibits and in all relevant library policy documents.” The Library is also committed to academic freedom -- no censorship of display materials will be imposed by the Library; however, materials that are judged by the Library’s Display Working Group to be defamatory, willfully false, obscene, inciting racial hatred, or are discriminatory will not be approved.

Goals:

  • Promote the diverse holdings of our Library collections, and reflect the diversity of our campus community

  • Promote the role of the Library, its collections, resources, services, and staff as central to the research and teaching programs of the campus community

  • Nourish intellectual, aesthetic, and creative growth

  • Educate the campus community on timely and relevant topics

  • Support the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions of Seattle University

  • Encourage individuals and groups to contribute to the expansion of knowledge

  • Support campus events, programs, symposia, activities, and accomplishments

  • Create inclusive digital connections to physical book displays that invite students to discover our books and resources

Displays Working Group

The displays installed in Lemieux Library & McGoldrick Learning Commons are the work of the Library Displays Working Group, composed of library faculty librarians and staff. The members of the Display Working Group are:

  • Rick Block, Metadata Librarian
  • Shelley Carr, Student Engagement Librarian, Working Group Lead
  • Rita Dufresne, Library Technician 3: Metadata and Collections
  • Ekaterini Papadopoulou, Health Sciences Librarian

The committee developed a displays policy based on considerations of our collection, the composition of the Seattle University campus community, and the interests and research needs of students attending the university.
