Hello good readers and patrons of Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons!
We are very excited to have “Binti” by Nnedi Okorafor chosen as the 2024-25 Seattle University Common Text. “Binti” joins in the Seattle University tradition of choosing other classics of speculative fiction by women authors for the Common Text program. For example, “The Lathe of Heaven” by Ursula LeGuin (2016) and “Kindred” by Octavia Butler (2015).
Stop by the library to see our themed display supporting this important afrofuturist, horror, science fiction, young adult title. We’ve chosen a selection of fiction and nonfiction titles of interest inspired by the themes of the book such as community, belonging, education and conflict between cultures and generations.
Lemieux Library also has a selection of ebook titles for your enjoyment in our “Binti” display such as:
- “Afrofuturism: the World of Black Sci-fi and Fantasy Culture” by Ytasha Womak
- “Kindred” by Octavia E. Butler adapted by John Jennings and illustrated by Damian Duffy (2017 graphic novel adaptation in ebook form!)
- “Bodyminds Reimangined: (dis)abililty, Race, and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction” by Samantha Dawn Schalk
